Plentiful in Alaska’s pristine and icy waters, bull kelp or Nereocystis luetkeana, is one of the most common seaweeds along the vast coastline. The abundance of kelp in Alaska makes it an excellent source of food. It is salty, savory, and packed with vitamins and minerals; a delicious and nutritious ingredient. Today, the majority of kelp is wild-harvested by the Barnacle team and they work closely with the ocean farmers who are just beginning to cultivate kelp. As they grow,  Barnacle is building a framework so that harvesters and kelp farmers can expand, too. At Sena Sea, we are doing our part by helping to create a consumer market for kelp.

Kelp is essential to the ocean ecosystem. The Barnacle team is careful and deliberate about how they harvest wild kelp. They strive to have the least impact on the resource; this includes visiting a different kelp bed for each harvest and only taking a small portion of the kelp bed.
Farmed kelp requires no arable land, fresh water, or fertilizers. A clean ocean, strong currents, and some hard-working sea farmers are all that is needed.
Throughout coastal Alaska, there are a handful of farmers in every stage of farming from pre-permitting to commercial-scale harvest. We ship directly to your door in insulated boxes. All orders are shipped on Mondays. Orders placed by noon (PST) on Monday will be shipped the same day, orders placed later will be shipped the following Monday. We will send an email with the tracking number on the day it ships so you know when to expect it. 

We use sustainable green cell foam to insulate our frozen boxes instead of styrofoam. A combination of pellet dry ice and booster packs (pcm gel packs that hold below freezing) are used to keep fish frozen during transit.

Smoked salmon jars are shipped separately from frozen products because the glass could break due to the very low freezing temperature of dry ice.
