Black Cod Tip Poke Bowls (Raw or Air-Fried)

Rich, buttery Sablefish (Black Cod) Tips are perfect for poke. Their high omega-3 content gives them an incredibly silky texture that pairs beautifully with bright citrus, fresh ginger, and creamy avocado.

At Sena Sea, all our frozen seafood is sushi grade, so you can confidently prepare it the way you enjoy it most. This recipe includes two delicious options: serve the marinated Black Cod Tips raw for a traditional poke bowl, or air fry them until lightly caramelized for a warm, buttery bowl that's just as satisfying.

Serves 2–3

Ingredients

For the Poke

  • 1 package (8 oz) Sena Sea Sablefish (Black Cod) Tips, thawed
  • 1½ Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1½ tsp fresh lime juice
  • ½ tsp honey (optional, but recommended)
  • 2 Tbsp thinly sliced sweet onion
  • 2 Tbsp sliced scallions
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger

Sriracha Mayo

  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp sriracha (or more to taste)
  • ½ tsp lime juice
  • ½ tsp soy sauce

For Serving (Optional)

  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice
  • ½ avocado, sliced
  • ½ cup shelled edamame
  • ½ cup diced cucumber
  • Furikake
  • Sesame seeds
  • Pickled ginger
  • Seaweed salad
  • Extra scallions

Instructions

1. Marinate the Fish

In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, lime juice, honey, garlic, and ginger.

Add the Black Cod Tips, onion, and scallions. Toss gently to coat.

Cover and refrigerate for 15–20 minutes. Because Black Cod is naturally rich and buttery, it doesn't require a long marinade.

2. Choose Your Preparation

Option 1: Classic Poke (Raw)

Every package of Sena Sea Black Cod Tips is sushi grade, giving you the flexibility to enjoy them raw in a classic poke bowl or lightly cooked for a different take. After marinating, simply assemble your bowls and enjoy.

Option 2: Air Fryer (Cooked)

Transfer the entire marinated mixture—including the onions and marinade—to an air fryer-safe pan or a piece of parchment paper with raised edges to keep all of the flavorful juices with the fish.

Air fry at 400°F for 8–10 minutes, or until the fish is just cooked through and lightly caramelized around the edges. Black Cod's naturally high oil content keeps it incredibly moist while developing rich, golden edges.

3. Make the Sriracha Mayo

Whisk together the mayonnaise, sriracha, lime juice, and soy sauce until smooth.

4. Assemble the Bowls

Divide the rice between bowls and top with the Black Cod Tips, avocado, cucumber, edamame, and any of your favorite toppings. Finish with a drizzle of sriracha mayo, a sprinkle of furikake and sesame seeds, and extra scallions.

Serve immediately.
