I’ll be honest — I’m not a great gardener.
I love fresh, seasonal veggies, but the fishing lifestyle just doesn’t exactly line up with a fabulous garden (at least, not for me).
Luckily, I’ve found a loophole.
I trade fish for local produce with a few friends. They get a selection of seasonal fish, and I get whatever veggies are ready that week. It’s become one of my favorite rhythms — and honestly, the spark I need when I’m feeling uninspired in the kitchen.
Because yes, I get dinner fatigue too. When I’m tired of cooking, I let the seasons lead. A basket of fresh produce paired with a different fish = a meal that feels like a treat instead of a chore.
A Seasonal Twist: Sablefish (Black Cod)
If you’re craving something new, sablefish — also called black cod — is a perfect way to break the routine. It’s not like salmon or halibut; it has a buttery, rich flavor and a silky texture that feels really special. Some even call it “butterfish” because it practically melts in your mouth.
Paired with seasonal produce, it creates an entirely different experience and brings excitement back to the dinner table.
Right now, I love roasting a big tray of tomatoes and garlic until they’re caramelized and fragrant, then sliding sablefish into that bubbling goodness. A swirl of pesto or a handful of fresh herbs at the end makes it taste like something from a restaurant — with hardly any effort at all.
It’s proof that even a tired cook can find joy in the kitchen with a little help from the seasons and a flexible approach to dinner.
